Shortage of drivers a drag on radio cab service

Radio Taxi Service was launched in the city more than a month ago, under which 25 AC taxis were introduced to facilitate the passengers of the city and surrounding areas.

Radio Taxi Service was launched in the city more than a month ago, under which 25 AC taxis were introduced to facilitate the passengers of the city and surrounding areas. Of course people of the city have given thumbs up to this service as they get this service within no time by dialing 4141414 anytime of the day or night. But the initial problem i.e shortage of educated drivers is still dogging the service.

This problem was also admitted by DS Jaspal,Principal Secretary,Transport,on June 10,when this service was launched from Satluj Club by Punjab Transport Minister Mohan Lal.

According to sources,“About a dozen taxi drivers left this service after serving for a month or some days as taxi drivers in the city. The reasons are many.”

Some taxi drivers deputed in the beginning were not educated,so they faced problem in maintaining the log book. While some blamed rude behaviour of a few employees of the company with them, others complained of not getting over-time. However a general problem being faced by many was that whenever a taxi met with a small accident, and got scratches etc,it burnt a hole in the pockets of the driver responsibility to get it repaired laid with him. It was tough for the driver who was getting only Rs 5,000 per month as salary.

On the other hand,Sumit Puri, location incharge,Radio Taxi,Ludhiana, said,“We give incentives to the taxi drivers other than their monthly salary. It is like if they earn Rs 25,000 per month,we give them 22% commission. Secondly, the drivers can not claim for overtime as they report late in the morning, about which we never complain. If they spend one or two hours extra in the evening, they should also not complain. As far as uneducated drivers are concerned, there were some earlier. We imparted them two-day formal training of driving through a well trained staff from Delhi and Bombay. We spent Rs 1,000 on each driver per day for training. After training, some of them left on the pretext that they were not capable of maintaining the log book. As far as behavioral problem of some employees was concerned,we have managed that problem. Now we have appointed new drivers, but still there is a shortage of about 2—3 drivers.”

He said,“We are getting overwhelming response from public and nobody has any complaint about the service. In case, someone has any complaint about taxi service, one can dial up at 01614141414.”

Meanwhile, residents are happy with the launch of this service. Nidhi Arora,a working girl, said,“I belong to Chandigarh and whenever I have to reach the bus stand late in the evening,I hire max cab and within minute a metered,well-appointed AC taxi picks me up and drops me at my destination. It is not only safe but also very comfortable, especially in this hot and humid weather.”

While Yamini and her husband Sumesh, said,“Whenever we have to go to attend any function in the city,we hire this taxi service and travel without tension. It is indeed a very good service.” Max cabs, successfully running in Delhi,Mumbai,Chandigarh,Mohali,Ludhiana and Amritsar will be soon launched in Jalandhar.
