Set on fire allegedly by six youths on Thursday in Ludhiana at her residence in Prem Nagar of Dhandari Khurd area, the 16-year-old girl succumbed to burn injuries and died at around 1.30 am on late Monday.

She was admitted at Government Medical College and Hospital sector 32 Chandigarh.

In her statement to police on Thursday, she named six persons- Shahjad, Babbu, Binder, Amarjit, Chhotu and Anwar for putting her on fire. She had registered a case of attempt to rape and kidnapping against the four in October.

However, the story is not all straight. The Ludhiana police is in a tight spot as the victim changed her statement twice in the presence of her mother during the incident. Firstly she said that her mother was not present when incident happened and second time she said that her mother was held hostage by the accused.

The girl also allegedly had an affair with a guy named Sultan, an important link in the entire episode. He is absconding and police is trying to nab him. Four of accused named by the girl – Shahjad, Binder, Chhotu and Anwar were under police arrest till filing of this report, while Babbu and Amarjit are absconding.

Meanwhile, parents of Shahjad claimed that their son was giving an exam at a local college when the incident happened. The police is yet to scan the CCTV camera footage of the college.

The family of the girl was also not adamant to get medical check-up done after she returned home on October 27. While family claimed she was kidnapped on October 25, neighbours told police that she went out to watch a movie with Sultan at her own will. The family just got an attempt to rape case registered against four persons, including Shahjad and Anwar.

A Muslim family- they also did not like the victim wearing jeans and western wear, told the neighbours.

ACP south Rupinder Kaur said that the priority is to arrest two remaining accused named by the girl and investigation will only bring out the truth.
