School students along with city-based NGO,RBS roots, conducted yet another cleanliness drive at the Sutlej river near the Jalandhar bypass on Friday evening. As part of the Shaheed Bhagat Singh birth anniversary celebrations, the students of Bal Bharti public school in Dugri Phase 2,BCM,Shastri Nagar and Spring Dale Public School took part in the clean-up drive.
The NGO had earlier conducted a drive at the same place but its members say that despite the awareness campaigns, commuters and effluent discharge from industries continue to pollute the river. Dr Amardeep Singh Bains, founder of RBS roots, said: Students took out polythene bags, broken photo frames, photos of gurus and gods and many other things from the river. The pollution also indicates that industrial effluents are being discharged into the river via the Buddha nallah.
The NGO members stated that they will ask the administration to install meshes on either side of the river to prevent pollutants from being thrown into it.
