Railway union stages protest,demands strict action against URMU for mugging members

Demanding action against members of the Uttariya Railway Mazdoor Union (URMU),members of National Railways Men Union (NRMU) staged a rail roko andolan on Tuesday.

Demanding action against members of the Uttariya Railway Mazdoor Union (URMU),members of National Railways Men Union (NRMU) staged a rail roko andolan on Tuesday. The protest affected three trains in Ludhiana and 15 others plying in other parts of the state.

On Saturday night,members of both the unions clashed at the Ferozepur railway station,following which five members of NRMU were admitted to Christian Medical College and Hospital,Ludhiana,after they sustained injuries. The brawl reportedly took place after unions submitted their ballot boxes for the Railway Union elections in Ferozepur.

Both the unions claimed that they did not start the fight. Avtar Singh,who is in coma,Daljeet Singh,Anil Kumar,Som Nath and Parminder Singh are undergoing treatment at CMCH.

URMU members alleged that four of their members were admitted to a hospital in Amritsar after they were attacked by NRMU members.

Talking to Chandigarh Newsline,Paramjit Singh,divisional secretary of All India Loco Running Staff Association that supports NRMU,said,“We protested at the Ludhiana Railway Station to demand action against URMU members,who had started the fight. The authorities have asked for two days. We will continue to protest,if no action is taken till then”.

While B C Sharma,general secretary of URMU,was not available for comments,another union member,Bhajnik Singh,said,“Our members Parveen,Sukhdev,Dharamraj and Ramesh were attacked by NRMU. There is no truth in their allegations that we picked the fight. We had peacefully submitted the ballot boxes and later came back after our president Parveen was attacked”.

The results of the elections will be announced on May 2. As many as six unions are contesting the elections.

Ravinder Sharma,station superintendent,Ludhiana,said,“The rail roko was for an hour and several NRMU members sat on railway tracks to mark their protest. In Ludhiana,the Amritsar-Katihar Express was delayed by 1 hour and 5 minutes,and LF Passenger (from Ludhiana to Ferozepur) by 40 minutes”.
