Although the Queen’s Baton Relay, which passed through the city on Saturday, warmed up many hearts,it has also ruffled a few feathers with many leaders in the city. After the yesterday’s function, veteran players were seen grumbling about mismanagement in the progrrame and poor arrangements. Today, angry Mayor Hakam Singh Giaspura told Newsline that despite being the first citizen of the city,he was not invited for the event.

“I was not officially informed by any department, neither the Sports department nor the deputy commissioner’s office. I was away to Chandigarh for some work. Had I been given prior intimation of this big event,I would have stayed back in the city. This cannot be taken lightly. I will speak with the deputy commissioner on the issue.”

Supporting the Mayor, senior deputy Mayor Parveen Bansal said,“This is a serious lapse on the part of the district administration which does not know the protocol of inviting leaders of the city at such important events. Even the players informed telephonic calls at the eleventh hour, what to talk of Mayor or even other persons.”

He went on adding in anger,“This has happened for the second time. Even in the World Cup Kabaddi tourney, our councillors were not allowed to enter the stadium despite having VIP cards. So such lapses should not be repeated. Even if it was a joint operation of many departments, duties should have been divided to avoid overlapping, but here everything was marred by confusion.”

It needs to be mentioned that while in Amritsar, the Mayor was seen almost everywhere, but the Mayor moved out of the city for a day for want of ‘official’ invitation.

Meanwhile,Deputy Commissioner Rahul Tiwari said,“It was a Sports department function. The district administration had chipped in to provide logistic support. But I have been told by the Sports department that Mayor was called, but his personal assistant received the call and he told that Mayor was not in the city.”

Mayor, however, feels that intimation should have been given a day before rather than at the last moment.
