The Khanna Bachao Sangharsh Committee that has been struggling to get an elevated road constructed in the town to ease traffic problems that have cropped up due to the national highway widening project has got support from an important quarter.

Kamaljit Soi,Vice-Chairman of the Punjab State Road Safety Council and Punjab Police State Apex Committee on Road Safety and Traffic Management,Government of Punjab,has now joined their cause.

Talking to Newsline,Soi said: “Along with Anandpur Sahib MP Ravneet Bittu and Khanna Municipal Council president Iqbal Singh Channi,I recently met Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways C P Joshi. The agenda was the construction of an elevated road through Khanna for smooth functioning of trade in the largest grain market of Asia .The minister was briefed about the issue being faced by Khanna residents and was also told about the discussions held previously with the officials concerned. He promised to take up the issue with the officials concerned and promised the best possible solution.”

Soi said the minister was also handed over the past communication with the officials as well as the letter written by Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Rahul Tiwari to project director Col Rajat Rastogi. He said the minister was also apprised of the sudden rise in the number of accidents after the project to make the National Highway stretch from Panipat to Jalandhar a six-lane road,due to poor measures taken by Soma Isolax,the company executing the work.

Soi said the minister promised immediate and stern action as well as rectification. He agreed on coordination of Soma Isolex with state agencies like Punjab State Road Safety Council as it was the state’s responsibility to ensure safety of its citizens.
