With most of the top names of Punjabi literature like that of Dr Surjit Patar,Dalip Kaur Tiwana and others staying out,the battle for president of Punjab Sahit Akademi will be fought between sitting president Gurbhajan Singh Gill, novelist Mitr Sen Meet and short story writer Sukhjeet on April 15.
The process for filing nominations is on for the polls to the literary body while April 5 has been fixed as the date for withdrawal of nominations.
Dr Anup Singh,Guriqbal Singh,Sukhjeet and Sushil Dosanj are in the fray for the post of senior vice-president while there are some 16 names for the post of vice-president. The Akademi,as per its constitution, elects five vice- presidents out of which one is from outside Punjab. Eight people are in the fray for the post of general secretary while 29 will contest for 15 posts of executive. The executive has two posts for women and one for someone outside Punjab.
Sources say hectic activity is currently on to reach a unanimous decision for the post of president, senior vice- president and general secretary. Efforts are on to retain the old team.
Basically, there are no groups this time. One-time arch rivals Gurbhajan Singh Gill and Dr Sukhdev are now working as a team. So there are efforts to maintain the status quo. Gill will remain president while Sukhdev will be general secretary and the post of senior vice-president will remain with Sukhjeet. The contest will be on for only the posts of vice-presidents and executive members, said a senior member of Akademi on condition of anonymity.
