Although Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Partap Singh Bajwa has thanked AICC President Sonia Gandhi and vice-President Rahul Gandhi for accepting his recommendations for the PPCC executive committee, the list has raised eyebrows among many Congress leaders in Ludhiana. While many are complaining that they were ignored, many others are planning to give up their membership in the coming days.

The list from Ludhiana has put Ashok Prasher,Malkiat Singh Birmi Ishar Singh Meharbaan — all candidates of Congress in the Vidhan Sabha elections — in the executive body, while former PPCC secretary Parminder Mehta has not been given any designation in the new list. Another Congress candidate from Ludhiana South,Gurmail Pehalwaan, has been ignored altogether, while senior Congress MLA and former Minister Rakesh Pandey has been placed in the executive committee.

“It seems that in the new list,a special preference has been given to the persons who are from the anti-Manish Tewari camp while his supporters have been either kept out of the list or been demoted,” said a senior Congress leader on the condition of anonymity.

This was the reason that Congress MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu, who openly protests against Union Minister Manish Tewari, was made general secretary of PPCC and Congress MLA Surinder Dawar has also been given a key post. Major Singh Bhaini from Ludhiana Rural is also general secretary of PPCC,against whom former Congress MLAs Ishar Singh Meharbaan and Jassi Khangura had given in writing that he was not supportive enough in the Vidhan Sabha elections from Jagraon and Dakha constituencies.

New entrants Sunil Kapoor and Dhruv Aggarwal have been given the key posts of secretary,PPCC.

Parminder Mehta, former secretary,PPCC,said,“After more than 20 years of working in Congress, one would not like to remain in executive body. I had stated that if I will not be promoted,I will like to stay away from the executive list. I am surprised to see some names who have never shown their faces in the field, while senior leaders have been kept aside.”

Rakesh Pandey, former Congress Minister and MLA from Ludhiana North said,“I have no objections for being kept in executive body, but the ones who have been ignored, will be taking up their issue in the coming days. Ishar Singh Meharbaan also confirmed that Major Singh Bhaini did not work in the interest of the party in the Vidhan Sabha elections, but I have nothing to say regarding the high command’s decision in giving him the key post in PPCC.”
