Principals’ meet today but no mention of agenda yet

It would be for first time that an official principals’ conference is being organised by PU.

A conference of principals of colleges affiliated to Panjab University, Chandigarh, will be held in Ludhiana district for the first time on Monday.

Sources in the varsity said that it would be for the first time that an official principals’ conference being organised by PU would be held at an aided private college, G H G Khalsa College, Gurusar Sudhar.

However, the move has not gone down well with some of the principals who said that no agenda for such a high- level conference had been sent to them.

As many as 181 principals of government, aided and private colleges affiliated to PU have been invited for the conference but without any specified agenda.

Talking to Newsline, a college principal from Ludhiana, requesting anonymity, said, “It is a surprising move that official principals’ conference at the state level is being held at Sudhar college. The move is not appreciable as it creates disparity placing one principal/college above the rest. Few years back when R C Sobti was vice-chancellor, it was decided to hold a conference in Shimla and the move came under severe criticism. It is a similar situation now when a private aided college has been selected as the venue. There are two government colleges and PU’s own regional campus is located in Ludhiana. But they were not selected as the venue.”

The principals confirmed that they had received no agenda as of now for the conference. Gurminder Kaur, principal, Government College for Girls, Ludhiana, said, “It was on Saturday late that we got an invite for this conference. It is for the very first time that an official conference is being held at Sudhar. We have got no agenda, written or oral, for the same.”

“The conference has always been held on the main PU campus in Chandigarh,” said another college principal from Ferozepur. R L Behl, principal, Sri Aurobindo College of Commerce and Management, said, “I shall be attending the conference but we have got no agenda for the conference.”

R S Jhanji, principal, A S College Khanna and senate member of PU, said, “We have got no agenda for the principals’ conference and it is astonishing that the conference is being held at an aided college.”

When contacted, S S Deol, principal of G H G Khalsa College, Sudhar, said that “agenda will be decided there and then”. “There has been no specific reason for holding conference in my college. No written agenda has been prepared but general issues like lack of grants, new recruitment against vacancies etc will be discussed. We are expecting almost 140 principals to attend conference on Monday from Punjab.”

Naval Kishore, dean colleges development, PU, said, “This conference has been a regular feature at PU for years and now it will be held in other parts of Punjab too like Muktsar and Ludhiana. Agenda will be decided on the spot as PU Vice-Chancellor Arun Grover will inaugurate it.”

Harpreet Dua, fellow and dean, faculty of design and arts, PU, when contacted, said, “I will be taking up the matter with vice-chancellor for meetings/conferences in future; these should be held on main campus or regional campuses of PU.”

Another principal said “such decisions can have an impact on senate elections of PU and it dilutes the power of varsity as an authority”.
