Staking claims to be a pioneer in the technique of the now famous ‘beating heart’ surgery, which was performed on Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Saturday,cardio-surgeon Dr H S Bedi has suggested two weeks’ rest and yoga exercise for the speedy recovery of the prime minister. Dr Bedi is the present chairman of the Cardio Sciences Division at Sigma New Life Hospital in Ludhiana.

“Beating heart surgery was developed by me as conventional surgeries have greater risks and a longer recovery period. I have set a world record for having performed the first multi-vessel beating heart surgery. The technique has been adopted world over now and is very popular,” said Dr Bedi.

A career spanning over 20 years in the field of cardiac surgery,Dr Bedi who has worked as a consultant in the Escorts Heart Institute,New Delhi and St Vincents Hospital in Sydney claims to have first used this technique on one Labh Singh of Sirsa on July 13,1998.

In a conventional surgery, the heart is stopped with the help of medicines and the patient is hooked onto a heart lung machine. After the surgery is performed, the heart is restarted,he explains.

Dr Bedi says he has used this technique in almost a 100 patients in just a year. He has also explained this technique at various conferences. A paper on the topic was published in the journal — Annals of Thoracic Surgery in the edition of January 2000.

Dr Bedi and his technique also find mention in the Limca Book of World Records 2001 and has been accepted as a world record.

The technique has successfully been tried in thousands of cases worldwide including former US President Bill Clinton.

“Recovery after the surgery is very quick, blood usage is brought down to a great extent and there is no damage to the vital organs such as the brain, heart or lungs as would happen in conventional surgery. Dr Manmohan Singh should be out of the hospital within 5-6 days if all goes well and back to work in two weeks’ time,” the doctor says. This is the usual recuperation period of the patients,he smiles.

Dr Bedi felt that Manmohan Singh should add a regimen of yoga to his other preventive measures as it was said to have “very good results” in his patients.

Dr Bedi also sends across his best wishes to Dr

Manmohan Singh.
