Two officials of Department of Excise were injured in an attack by miscreants,allegedly belonging to the peti mafia of the city. The incident took place at Ludhiana railway station around midnight of January 27 when officials were conducting a raid.
The injured are ETO D S Garcha and Jarnail Singh — driver of Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner Dr Rishipal Singh. A case under Section 307 (attack with intention to kill),186,353 (disturbing official on government duty) and others of the IPC has been registered at the railway police station. The police are on the lookout for Lambu,Toni,Johny,Gully,YP,Raju Tel Chor and others — named by Garcha — said SHO Baldev Singh.
“We have been conducting raids for three days now. On the day of the attack,I was at the spot till around 11 pm. After I left the spot,the mafia attacked the officials. They beat up my driver and threw him on the railway tracks. The attackers thought that I was inside the car and thus they smashed it. My staff rounded up four vehicles used by the attackers,” said Singh.
This is not the first time the department staff faced such an attack. After Singh took over as assistant commissioner a year-and-half ago,the department had received threats from not only the mafia,which had been ruling the Ludhiana railway station till the crackdown began,but also from a strong lobby of industrialists.
