A day after PAU scientist Dr Charanjeet Singh Malhi was stabbed to death at his house in BRS Nagar, the police arrested the deceased’s wife Nimanjeet Kaur, son Simrat and Jaskaran Bhullar,a friend of Simrat,in Bulara village on Friday.

Two other accomplices of Simrat — Mandeep Singh and Hasrhdeep Singh — are still absconding.

The police have also recovered the car used in the crime though they are yet to find the murder weapon.

Though the police consider 18-year-old Simrat as the main accused in the case,he denies it.

“My father and I were engaged in a scuffle at the time and it was Mandeep who stabbed him (Malhi) in an effort to rescue me,” claims Simrat.

Station House Officer of the Sarabha Nagar police station,Raminder Singh, said: “Basically, the house in which the professor was residing stands in the name of his wife. After separation, the wife and children (who live in Panchkula) fell on bad times and wanted some sort of maintenance amount from the professor.”

Dressed in a blue T-shirt and jeans,Simrat said: “I came to ask for my share in the house but my father started fighting with me.”

The arrested were remanded in police custody for a day by the Court of Judicial Magistrate A S Virk. According to the police,Simrat dropped out of school after matriculation and is a drug addict.
