When the order to ‘dress professionally’ was circulated on campus by Dean,Postgraduate Studies,Punjab Agricultural University,it set many thinking.

While many took this order as an indicator to replace casuals with formals, sleeveless with sleeves, increase the length of the skirt and so on,Dean Dr S K Mann put all fears to rest.

“This order, which we released recently,is only to remind the students and teachers of the university that they should take all precautionary measures when working in labs. We are basically a science university where both teachers and students handle a lot of chemicals, pesticides and so on. The order is just to remind them to wear lab coats while working in labs, see that their safety kits are in place and fire extinguishers are in perfect order. It is our duty to keep guiding them from time to time.”

When asked whether this order had anything to do with how students dress to college or teachers to their classes, the Dean said,“No,not at all. What to wear to university is one’s own will and we do not interfere in that at all. This order, which was sent last year too and also forms a part of the university prospectus, forms the guidelines on how a person should be dressed while working in a lab or spraying chemicals in the farm. It has more to do with safety of the person.” He added,“We have not even spelt out what professionally means.”

Yet,for some, the order meant “changing the wardrobe”. “This order had all of us looking at what we and what others were wearing. While the dress code had not been laid down,we felt jeans, skirts and exposing dresses like sleeveless tops and shirts will have to be thrown out of the window,” said a post-graduate student,on condition of anonymity.
