To the utter astonishment of the residents,a main road running from Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar to J Block caved in on Sunday afternoon.
This busy road has been sealed by the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (LMC) and will remain so until repair work is done.
The LMC had recently completed a mammoth task of laying a sewerage pipe in this area and a road had been built on it. A few days of showers later the road caved in,making commuting a problem for residents. Luckily no commuter or vehicle was stuck when the road collapsed.
Similar reports of roads collapsing have emerged from various parts of the city since the day the rains began.
When contacted LMC Commissioner A K Sinha said,We are aware of this problem and corrective measures will be taken up at the earliest. Once a sewer line is laid, the road constructed on it should not be used for at least a year. However a busy city like Ludhiana cannot wait for one year and thus these cave ins happen. We have sealed the road for now so that there is no accident and repair works will be taken up as soon as the weather improves.
A resident of Barewal whose car sank and got stuck in one such cave in said,At least for our area the sewer work begins just before the rains come in and then to cover up the entire thing in a hurry a lot of sand and soil is put on it. However one rain and this soil become soft and our vehicles get stuck. Why cant the MC finish its work on time or else at least ensure that the cover up is strong enough to brave the rains.
