The Ludhiana police on Friday said that seven-year-old girl whose body was recovered at Jagirpur village of Meharban area on June 9 was gangraped by two drug addicts before they stabbed her to death.
On Thursday, the police arrested two accused, who later confessed to the crime.
The accused had lured the girl with biscuits and sweets, the police added. The accused have been identified as Manoj Kumar, 20, and Mukesh Kumar, 25, natives of Bareilly of Uttar Pradesh. The accused work in a dying factory as drivers and live in a rented accommodation on Tajpur road.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Manjit Singh Dhesi told a press conference that a special investigation team was formed to solve the case.
“The police scanned the footage of CCTV cameras installed outside factories of the areas and accused were identified. They had been missing from work since June 6. Later, we arrested them from Tajpur chowk on Thursday. The accused have confessed to their crime,” he added.
The ADCP said the accused worked at Jai Mata Dying factory in Jagirpur area. The accused had come to Kanta Fabric Store in Guru Nanak Dev Colony to load clothes on June 6. The accused were liquor and drug addicts. They had stopped the girl who was going to meet her father who worked in a factory in Guru Nanak Dev Colony.
“The accused also threatened the girl with a knife and after raping her, she was murdered,” he said. The parents of the victim had filed a missing report at Salem Tabri police station on June 7.
On June 9, her mutilated body was spotted by a man in Jagirpur near Meharban village when he was grazing his cattle.
