Education Minister Sikander Singh Maluka is learnt to have agreed to the idea of changing the name of Government College for Women (GCW) to Government College for Girls (GCG).

GCW principal Gurminder Kaur raised a demand in this regard when Maluka visited the college recently. “Young girls are studying in this college. But from the name,it seems that aged women are the students. So we are also keen to change the name of this college from GCW to GCG,and the college must send us the proposal regarding the same. The change will be done soon,” the minister reportedly told her.

Students of this college have been demanding a change in the name of the college for long.

Maluka said a regulatory commission on the lines of Electricity Regulatory Commission would be set up to check the functioning of private institutions. A number of private schools and colleges had hiked the fees so much that education had gone out of reach for the common man. So the commission would look into the expenses and fee structure of private institutions,he added.

“To start vocational courses along with regular degrees,a high-power committee has already been formed and this committee will shortlist need-based courses which the students can opt for along with their degree courses and hence can get jobs in their respective fields,” he said.

Later, the minister gave away prizes to the meritorious students of the college.
