Major fire in two factories on Diwali,40 minor fire incidents

Cracker woes: More than 60 admitted to hospitals with burn injuries

More than 60 patients were admitted to several city hospitals with burn injuries among them 30 cases were with eye injury on Diwali. The eye injury patients were mostly children. The city also witnessed two major fire tragedies and 40 other minor ones. Two people died of electrocution.

Burn injuries

A maximum of 20 cases with eye injuries were reported in Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) while four were of body burns. While in Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH),out of total 18 burn cases reported last night,3 were of severe eye injuries.

As many as 12 burn cases in Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital and five in Civil Hospital were reported. Two people were brought dead in SPS Apollo Hospital on Diwali night due to electrocution.

More than 10 cases of eye injury due to crackers were reported in Dr Dhami Eye Hospital out of them two required surgery.

Talking to Newsline,Dr Dhami said,“Of all patients around 8 were children and 2 have been operated on.”

Dr Ashish Chandra,eye specialist from CMCH said,“Of all 20 patients reported after Diwali,70 per cent were children.”

Fire in factories

While a fire incident was reported 6.30 pm on Sunday at Garg Acrylics on Kanganwala Road,near village Jugiana and it took two hours to douse the flames,another major fire broke out at Sudhram Yarn factory in Shivpuri. “As many as 10 fire dousing vehicles from outside and 1 from Halwara Air Force was rushed immediately. There are five floors due to which it is getting difficult. Forty other minor fire incidents came to light,” said Bhupinder Singh,assistant divisional fire officer,Ludhiana.

Animals and birds too bear the brunt

It was a tough day for birds and animals too. Four injured pigeons with burns on skin and wings fractured due to crackers was reported at Pakshi Sewa Sanstha,(PSS),confirmed Vipan Bhatia.

Ajay Jain,from NGO People for Animals said,“As many as 5 dogs have come since evening. All having injuries due to crackers. One case is serious where some naughty children tied crackers to tail of a dog and burnt it. However,he was rescued by some locals and luckily rushed to us.”
