A breach in the Bathinda branch of the Sirhind canal in Beer Talaab area has inundated over 500 acres, damaging crops and property.
“We are yet to find out the exact reason for over 100-feet wide breach in canal,” said Dr Basant Garg, DC.
In a similar incident last year, rodents were said to have been the culprits. Around Rs 40 crore was spent on repairs after that incident. However, people claim, this year the breach is wider.
“Once the water level comes down to a sufficiently low level, repair work will start,” Garg said.
