The kin of Darshan Lal,the terminated driver of Ludhiana Municipal Corporation’s Health Wing, who crushed 22- year-old Kafia Parveen in March 2010 under his truck on Tajpur Road, sat on protest along with his dead body in front of MC Zone A headquarters on Wednesday.

His family including his wife, four daughters and a son alleged that,“Lal died because of his termination by then MC Commissioner A K Sinha, who did not even listen to the pleas of Lal”.

The family is now demanding a permanent job for one family member in MC.

More than 150 employees of MC drivers,Punjab Driver Technical Union and Rashtriya Safai Mazdoor Congress protested Wednesday with dead body of Lal placed front of MC zone A headquarters.

Reportedly, the case file of Darshan Lal dated November 22,2011 was also ‘not found’ on Wednesday in MC’s record room. “File number 193 and 195 are there but Lal’s case file numbered 194 is not there in record room,” said a source from MC to Newsline.

As per family,Lal who joined MC in 1994 “was not the culprit as the two girls on their bicycle panicked after seeing the truck and one of them fell off the cycle and died on the spot due to her head injuries”.

They also alleged that “despite Lal’s multiple visits to the MC office, after termination,he was not heard and thus went into depression and died on Tuesday”.

Eyewitnesses of the accident in 2010,however,told another story. As per them, the girls were crushed under the wheels of truck on Tajpur road and one of them died on the spot due to her injuries.

As FIR was registered against Lal,who had fled from the spot.

Hansraj Gangt,Punjab head of Rashtriya Safai Mazdoor Congress, told Newsline: “If the demands of the family are not met by Thursday,A2Z vehicles (garbage collection company) will not be allowed to move in the city and even safai karamcharis of MC will join the strike.”

The family of deceased refused a freezer to keep the dead body and was asked to do so by city resident Ravi Sharma,as the scene became intolerable for passers-by.

When contacted,A S Sekhon, incharge health and sanitation wing,MC,he said,“Firstly the driver was terminated and died due to cancer and thus MC is not bound to provide any job but still on compassionate grounds we have offered a job to family which they have not accepted till now. They cannot expect from us a job of any technician or driver as it demands a qualification criteria.”

Fifth demolition drive cancelled

An MC demolition drive in Indira Nagar,Zone B,was cancelled Wednesday due to the protest by the kin of Darshan Lal. Monika Anand, assistant town planner of Zone B,said: “Demolition drive was cancelled as drivers were not available for JCB machines.” She added: “Now it all depends on when the strike is called off by the drivers.” This was fifth drive in a row to be cancelled by MC in the past month.
