A novel protest by Congress workers against the ruling SAD-BJP combine in Ludhiana had even rival party supporters in splits on Saturday. Led by District Congress Committee (Ludhiana Urban) president Pawan Dewan, the Congress workers went around the city’s main market,Chaura Bazar, seeking alms from people to help the state government fill its coffers. The workers stated that the Punjab government had gone bankrupt and this was the only way to fund and help it to manage its affairs.

With the district president carrying a small collection box seeking donations for the government, even Akali and BJP supporters came out with donations. It soon turned into a fun-filled protest with laughs all around.

Dewan, however, said the government had gone totally bankrupt and was now resorting to heavy taxation to just run its day-to-day affairs. He added that the government had no money to even pay the salaries of its employees. The district Congress president further said that collections, from the protest on Saturday, will be offered to the government.

Prominent among those who were present included MLA Rakesh Pandey, Ludhiana East Congress candidate Gurmail Pahalwan, Leena Taparia, Sham Sunder Malhotra,Parminder Mehta, Ashwani Sharma, Baljinder Bunty, Sunny Kainth, Navneesh Malhotra, Rohit Pahwa, Pinky Bansal, Jarnail Singh Shimlapuri, Sanjay Sharma and Varinder Sehgal.
