There was a tense stand-off outside the Gautam Hosiery in Haibowal area after factory workers scuffled with the owner before holding a protest, for which they were joined by other labourers from the industrial area. Heavy police force was deployed to tackle the situation and the agitated protesters were pacified after two hours when police assured them that suitable action will be taken against the owner.
Anwar, a labour union leader, said the hosiery unit owner had beaten a labourer for not doing work properly. When the victim offered his resignation and asked for his due salary, the owner allegedly thrashed him. Anwar further said the 120 labourers at the unit came to the victim’s aid but the owner allegedly threatened them as well. Some anti-social elements threatened to set the factory ablaze but police tackled the situation. Both parties have now been called to Haibowal Police station on Sunday morning to sort out the matter.
