A day after he was arrested by the Vigilance Bureau for allegedly taking bribes,Tehsildar (west) Arvinder Pal Singh was sent to one-day police remand on Saturday. The tehsildar was arrested on Friday evening and bureau officials claimed to have recovered around Rs 1.14 lakh from his office.

Officials also alleged that the tehsildar had a compartment within the wall of his office where he allegedly hid money. His aide Bunty, who was allegedly taking the bribes on the tehsildar’s behalf, was also arrested.

SSP (Vigilance Bureau) Satinder Singh said: “We are still working on the details and are investigating the documents. The team had also raided the tehsildar’s house on Friday.”

Importantly, however,Tehsildar Arvinder Pal had handed over a list — comprising the names of politicians, journalists and industrialists, among others — to Ludhiana DC Rahul Tewari alleging that all of them were forcing him to do undue work.

The SSP vigilance, meanwhile, said the arrest had nothing to do with the list and added that he was not even aware of it. VB officials claim that the tehsildar charged an extra amount of Rs 2,000 to complete land registration deeds at his office. They further said that Bunty — the official’s aide — confessed to the crime. Officials added that Bunty used to collect money on behalf of the tehsildar. SSP Satinder Singh said more details would be revealed in the coming days as they were still investigating documents seized from the officer’s residence and workplace.
