Health Minister Surjit Kumar Jayani on Friday asked doctors at Civil Hospital,Ludhiana, not to prescribe costly or branded medicines to patients and instead write only salt name.
If any doctor is found promoting any brand in the hospital, strict action will be taken against him. That particular pharmaceutical company will also be banned from government department if they are found promoting their branded medicines at government hospitals instead of the generic medicines which are much cheaper, Jayani said during his maiden visit to the Civil Hospital,Ludhiana.
Admitting that health affairs in the state were in a sorry state,he said,Now the department has come to me and I will improve it. I know doctors fleece patients by writing costly medicines. I have told patients as well to send me photocopies of any such prescription of a doctor, and I will take action against the doctor as well as the company.
The minister found cleanliness at the hospital in satisfactory condition. Cleanliness was satisfactory. I believe if a hospital is not clean, patients can never be cured despite the best medicines, he said.
However, ahead of the ministers visit, his team had visited the hospital and got the cleanliness contractors contract cancelled because of poor services. The team had also told the doctors to keep things in order so as to save themselves from the ministers ire.
Jayani said he would visit various hospitals in the state so as to improve medical services.
