Flood relief: District sought Rs 16 crore,but got Rs 2 cr only

Though the district administration has claimed to have made all arrangements in case of floods in the city,out of a total of Rs 16 crore

Though the district administration has claimed to have made all arrangements in case of floods in the city,out of a total of Rs 16 crore sought for strengthening the banks of Sutlej river and Dhussi bundh sites,only Rs 2.2 crore were sanctioned by the state government. With this amount,the administration aims to strengthen three sensitive sites at Mattewara,Kherabet and Maddhepur while some work at the 13 remaining sites will also be carried out.

Deputy Commissioner Rahul Tewari confirmed that Rs 16 crore were sought but only Rs 2.2 crore were sanctioned. “Strengthening work with this amount is being carried out and we will carry out temporary work in case of any flood-like situation at any other location,” he added.

The 13 other sensitive sites are Dhulewal,Kasabad,Seed farm-2,Ghumana,Shergarh,Jamalpur Leli,Issapur,Seed farm-1,Manewal,Hujra,Sherwal Baghya,Mand Chatta and Raur Dhussi bundh.

Mattewara,Kherabet and Maddhepur are the most sensitive sites where extensive work had been done in the past. Even this year,the drainage department has focused on these sites again.

SDMs Kuljeet Pal Singh Mahi and Ajay Sood have been made nodal officers while departments food and civil supplies,health,mandi board and panchayati raj have been asked to arrange for boats,ropes well in advance.

ADC (Development) Kamalpreet Kaur Brar has been asked to tie up with the National Disaster Response Force. The DC has even asked his officers to make a list of divers of the respective areas and make arrangements for tractor-trolleys and JCB machines near bundh sites.

Flood control room

A flood control room will be set up in mini-secretariat on June 20 which will continue to operate till September. The numbers are 2748412,2400394 and 2444193.
