A raid by the Excise and Taxation Department on Palace Jewellers and its sister concern Palace Jeweller Private Limited resulted in a protest from the Ludhiana Jeweller Association whose members shut down their shops when the team entered these two showrooms.
Though the officers continued with the raid, they did not reveal the details. Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner Rajwinder Kaur said they were still checking the details and were verifying the documents seized.
She said,It will take few days to come to a conclusion. We have seized computers and are checking the stocks and other details. Nothing can be revealed as of now.
Interestingly, the moment the team went inside the stores of the jewellers on Fountain Chowk, owners of the other showrooms located nearby closed their shops and raised a hue and cry that the department was harassing them.
Anand Sikri, from Ludhiana Jeweller Association, said that the department must have informed them before coming.
However,Kaur said,I have no idea about the reaction of jewellers. They must be knowing the best about this protest.
She added that it was a part of pressure tactics.
However, the department continued their operation and would reveal the details once the operation was completed.
