Members of the Elementary Teachers Training (ETT) Teachers Union,Punjab,on Sunday staged a protest against the state government on Sunday.
The teachers from all over Punjab gathered at Atam Park and demanded shifting of schools running under zila parishad to the Punjab education department. They asked the government to bring their jobs and functioning of schools under the state education department.
Raising slogans against the government,the protesters also demanded release of salaries on time.
Talking to Newsline,Jagseer Singh Sahota,president of the union,said,We do not get salaries on time. Neither grants are on time nor are there any promotions. We demand freedom of schools running under political system of zila parishad to the education department.
Police force was deployed by the administration to tackle any emergency situation as the teachers had also planned to carry out a protest march. Anti-riot teams were deployed on the spot. The teachers alleged that they even carry out various works of school from their own expenditure such as printing question papers.
We were promised merger of schools with Punjab education department but nothing has been done, said Sahota.
Despite heavy police force deployed to manage the rally,the teachers started moving on roads but ended their protest in the evening. We gave a memorandum to SDM K S Mahi who assured us a meeting with CM soon, added Sahota.
