Muslims celebrated Eid-ul-zuha by sacrificing goats on Monday.
While thousands of goats were sacrificed, mandis were organised in Ludhiana and Malerkotla where sellers had come from UP and Rajasthan area to sell the animals.
Goats were sold for anything between Rs 40,000 and Rs 60,000, revealed information from the mandis of Ludhiana and Malerkotla. The age of goats was between 9 months and 1 year.
In Muslim town Malerkotla, Muslims offered namaz in the mosques. But no political leader came to address them.
In Ludhiana’s Jama Masjid, however, Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria, Congress MLAs — Bharat Bhushan Ashu and Rakesh Pandey — and few other local leaders had come to give a message of religious brotherhood to the Muslims.
Bittu said a few fundamentalists were present in each and every community. While damaging the image of their respective communities, they were always trying to weaken the social and secular fabric of society. “In order to defeat their evil designs, let’s strictly follow the message of love and humanity as given to us in our religious texts and also start celebrating our religious functions together,” he said.
Moulana Habibur Rehman, Imam, Punjab, and Mohd. Usman Rehmani, Naib Imam, Punjab, thanked the political figures for joining their function.
