For beer lovers, prices of the brew have gone up once again despite the fact that the Department of Excise and Taxation had tried to fix them for some time.
As per the label on the bottle, the price of one of the most favoured drink ranges between Rs 55 and Rs 75. However, not long ago,the liquor vend owners sold beer at the prices they felt was right. So the same bottle of beer was sold for Rs 100 at one vend,Rs 110 at another and even Rs 120 on the still other one. The Excise Department soon jumped in and fixed the price of beer at Rs 80 for non-chilled and Rs 85 for chilled. Banners announcing the same came up at the vends and sent cheer amongst the beer guzzlers.
But this happiness was shortlived. The restrictions were in place for just a week or so. The vend owners are demanding Rs 100 once again. They say buy if you want,or else leave, says Rupinder Singh,a resident of Pakhowal Road.
Ajinder Singh, another resident, says,This is not all. I once asked a vend worker to give me unchilled beer not because I would have saved Rs 5 but because I was buying the bottles for a party that was to be held the next day,and I did not need chilled ones. But this worker told me that I had no option but to buy only chilled one. When I asked him the reason,he said the vend manager had told them not to give the normal bottle to any one.
Ramneek Sehgal,a businessman, says,One feels cheated. The worse is that these vend managers and workers are very rude. The majority of the vends belong to people who are from the ruling party and they know that no one can harm them in any way so they can get away with anything.
Despite repeated attempts,Commissioner,District Excise and Taxation Department,Kamal Preet Brar could not be contacted.
