It was a heart warming ritual for children to write letters and receive gifts from the jolly giant Santa Claus. Sadly, with time ‘Dear Santa’ letters have become a prey of the internet age. Swaraj Kaur, senior post master with Bharat Nagar Chowk post office misses the days when her table was flooded with anonymous letters ‘To Santa’ with a wishlist.

“We used to keep those letters as we knew returning them will break children’s hearts. Now we do get such letters but very few. This year we have received only 25 such letters,” she said.

So have kids stopped sending letters to Santa? Not really. Kids are now using various mobile applications to interact with Santa.

Applications like ‘Call Santa’,‘Letters to Santa’,‘Talking Santa’ are now a big hit with tech savvy children. “Earlier my daughter used to write a letter to Santa but now she is using ‘Call Santa’ app where Santa replies to her call,” said Kavita Malhotra.

However, some kids have kept the tradition alive. Silvi Mary Sunil,a student of Sacred Heart Convent said,“I am 12-years-old now and I started writing to Santa when I was 6. Nothing can match the joy of writing letters.” While meeting and hugging Santa was what Anshika wanted on X-mas,Manveer wants real Santa to visit Ludhiana once, they wrote in their letters.

X-mas shopping in city is dominated with chinese products from bells of Rs 200 to Rs 20,000 X-mas trees. Mandeep Gupta, from Mandeep Store who imported the stuff from China said,“This year the response is lukewarm but we still hope for the best.”

Things are happier on eatables side, said Harjinder Kukreja from Hot Breads. “Schools have placed orders for colorful snowman cookies, plum cakes and snacks.”

Meanwhile, council of Ludhiana churches took out an X-mas procession on Saturday which started from Issa Nagri ground and was marked by carol singing.
