In a major exercise,Deputy Commissioner (DC) Rahul Tewari and his teams headed by various SDMs conducted surprise raids on government offices, schools, aaganwadi centers, bus stands, hotels and dhabas operating in the city. While the deputy commissioner maintained that “the main aim was to check the attendance of our employees in all offices to ensure that the general public coming to the offices do not face any problems just because the said officer is not present on his seat,” issues like quality of food being supplied to the children at aaganwadi centers and use of domestic LPG for commercial purposes were also looked in.

Problems being faced by the general public at the office of Local Registrar (birth and death) were heard by the DC and officials were asked to ensure that the issues are settled at the earliest. The DC was accompanied by ADC Rupanjli Kartik,DSM Ludhiana West Kuljeetpal Singh Sahi,Jasveer Singh SDM Samrala,Isha Kalia SDM Jagraon,Indu Malhotra SDM Payal,Baldev Singh SDM Raikot. The officials formed separate teams to check the offices.

The raiding teams found a total of 132 employees of the state missing from their duties. “We have issued orders to their heads to serve them show cause notices and the report of the same to be filed to the DC office as soon as possible. Officials who were found absent from their duties without required permissions will face strict action,” said Tewari.

Interestingly, while one hotel (Hotel Diamond),situated outside the bus stand, was found using one domestic cylinder and five such cylinders were found from dhabas operating outside the bus stand, reputed hotels like Hotel A and Hotel Maharja Regency failed to provide complete information about the use of LPG cylinders at their premises and hence have been served notices. No domestic cylinder use was found at these places, however.

During the raids, the office of Civil Surgeon topped the list of absentees where the number was as high as 36 workers followed by GLADA where 28 were found absent. Twenty-five employees of the office of District Food and Civil Supplies were found absent and the office of Ludhiana Municipal Corporation Zone D had 10 employees absent without notice, while another four were missing from LMC;s Middha Chowk office.
