According to police,Balwinder received a call on May 23 with the caller threatening him to kidnap his son and daughter if Balwinder failed to cough up Rs 5 lakh. When he receieved a similar call on May 25,Balwinder consulted his relatives and later approached the police.

When Balwinder, who owns a dry cleaning shop in Moti Nagar, received a third call on May 28,with the caller demanding that he bring Rs 2 lakh to the Bharat Nagar Chowk,plain-clothed police personnel followed him to the spot but no one turned up that day, revealed SHO Ranjit Singh.

Balwinder, however, began suspecting his neighbour Ranjit Singh alias Rishu. The victim told police that the caller occasionally stammered like Rishu.

Acting on the lead, police scrutinised the Rishu’s mobile call records. After further investigation, police arrested Rishu and his accomplice Johny on Thursday.

Rishu allegedly confessed to his crime and stated that he wanted to make a quick buck and had hence roped in his friend Amandeep for the job, revealed CIA inspector Harpal Singh.
