Hundreds of Congress workers on Wednesday staged a massive protest against prolonged power cuts and high power tariff in front of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) office at Chand Cinema. The protesters were led by the District Congress Committee Ludhiana (Urban) president Pawan Dewan and included senior leader and former minister Rakesh Pandey as well.
The Congress workers,as a mark of protest, distributed free lanterns and hand-held fans among the people to emphasise the point that there was no electricity in this scorching summer.
The party leaders pointed out that during the last six years of Akali rule, the power tariff had increased by a whopping 79 per cent in Punjab, which was unprecedented and has no parallel across India.
Dewan pointed out that besides this, the PSPCL was collecting advance tariff from the consumers, which was never adjusted later on. The PSPCL is simply cheating and robbing the consumers, he said, adding that it was becoming difficult for the common man to afford electricity.
Dewan also pointed out that the power cuts to the industry had gone up to three to four days, but that the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal was boasting of surplus power. Obviously, when the industry will shut down and move out, there will be surplus power in Punjab which he can export to Pakistan, he remarked sardonically,in a dig at the Deputy Chief Ministers claims that Punjab can export power to Pakistan.
Prominent among those present on this occasion were Rakesh Pandey,KK Bawa,Rakesh Prashar,Sham Sunder Malhotra,Parminder Mehta,Baljinder Bunty,Satwinder Jawaddi,Palwinder Taggar,Jarnail Singh Shimlapuri,Manpreet Grewal,Gurmukh Singh Mithu,Vinod Bathla,Vikram Pehlwan,Varinder Sehgal,Lali Grewal,Sanjay Sharma,Kanwardeep Papi and others.
