College teachers hold demonstration

A joint protest rally was carried out by teachers of Government colleges and the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Association.

The teachers were protesting against the pending arrears and few more issues.

Prof Jaipal Singh,president of the Government College Teachers Association (GCTA),said,“The state government has not given us pending arrears from June 2006 to July 2009 while the other government employees have been given these.”

The teachers demanded that the retirement age to be increased to 65 years as per Ministry of Human Resources Development (HRD) instructions.

They also demanded that the promotion of the teachers who have done refresher courses upto June 2010 should be implemented.

As of now,due promotions have been done in private colleges with refresher courses upto December 2000 while in Government colleges,it is December,2005.

The teachers also demanded the relaxation in refresher courses.

They asked for more funds in higher education so that the courses can be within reach of the common man.
