12-yr-old killed in road mishap

Ludhiana: Sheikh Ali Khan (12) was crushed under the tyres of a private bus on Wednesday afternoon. Eyewitnesses say that the boy was collecting used bottles at the city bus stand when a private bus which was reversing crushed him under its rear wheels. Sheikh died on the spot. Sources claim that the bus belongs to a leading transporter with close connections to the ruling party have stuck a compromise with the deceased’s family.

GADVASU study on breast cancer

Ludhiana: Dr B V Sunil Kumar,assistant biochemist from the School of Animal Biotechnology,GADVASU,has been sanctioned a project titled “Development and evaluation of sero-diagnostic assay for timely diagnosis and prognosis of mammary tumors ” by the Centre’s Department of Biotechnology,under its Rapid Grant for Young Investigators (RGYI) 2011-12 scheme. The project as per the university envisages easier ways and means to diagnose mammary tumors at an early stage. Canines will be used in the study as canine mammary tumor are comparable to human breast cancer. The project will try to develop a mechanism for timely detection of aggressive mammary tumors.

Workshop on making paper bags

Ludhiana: Aagaz — a charitable foundation — along with Blossom Convent School,Jagraon and Department of Family Resource Management,College of Home Science PAU organised a free training workshop for rural women on making eco-friendly paper bags. The two-day camp ended on Wednesday. Preeti Kansal,of Aagaz,informed,“In this mutual effort,we are providing free training to the under privileged women. Apart from this the reason to organize this training camp is to spread awareness among people to make more use of paper bags instead of plastic bags which cause environmental harm. Making of paper bags is a small but true effort from our side to save our environment.”
