Hundreds of chemists went on strike on Saturday causing inconvinince to people who were unable to buy medicines. The strike was in retaliation against police. They claim police had wrongly booked a chemist, Kharaiti Lal Kalra- from Kalra Medical store two days back.
The chemists from Ludhiana Retail Chemist Association alleged that police wrongly booked the owner of Kalra Medical Store under NDPS Act. Police had allegedly recovered some psychotropic drugs from the store.
Aman Ahuja, president of the association told Newline, “Police booked a genuine chemist and alleged that it recovered 80 capsules of Tramadol from him but this drug does not come under category of banned drugs. They also alleged that 20 injections of Brufen were recovered from him but the chemist has denied it. We request police not to book genuine chemists and we are ready to cooperate with them fully in anti-drugs drive.”
He added that the chemist is still behind bars. However, the chemists had a meeting with police commissioner R K Jaiswal on Saturday who has marked enquiry in the case to ACP Nilambari Jagdaley.
“They have assured us right action by Monday and till then we request chemists to keep shops open. Also we appeal to them not to sell banned drugs,” said Ahuja. He added that Kalra even submitted bills for the seized drugs but was not released. With closure of chemist shops on Saturday, patients were seen waiting at chemist shops inside hospitals.
