Panic gripped villagers in Sawaddi Kalan of Jagraon on Tuesday after a police party opened fire at a black-coloured Scorpio car, purportedly carrying a drugs consignment.

The police claimed that they gave chase to the vehicle after receiving a tip-off that drugs were being smuggled. The accused continued to speed away even after police punctured its wheels with bullets and fired warning shots in the air.

However, the police later learnt that they were chasing a gang of goat thieves, not drug peddlers. SP (Investigation) Jagraon Waryam Singh confirmed that two persons were arrested from the spot while another person managed to escape. The police also recovered seven goats from the vehicle. The arrested were identified as Harchand Singh and Jagdev Singh.

“Sources had said that drug peddlers were traveling in Scorpio and some drugs in huge quantities were being smuggled to other districts so we chased it but they were members of a gang that steals goats of poor farmers. We arrested two of them while another is  absconding,” said SP (D). He added that the accused also deliberately rammed their Scorpio into the police vehicle and they had to fire in self-defence.
