AHEAD of the festive season, railway employees have something to cheer about. In response to the letter of demands sent by the Uttariya Railway Mazdoor Union (URMU) to the Ministry of Railways, many of the demands have been accepted.

“The Railway Board has accepted many of our demands and we are happy for employees who will get some relief ahead of festive season,” said M L Prashar, divisional vice-president,URMU.

In one of the major victories for employees, the board has opened 335 posts to be shifted from group C to B for Nothern Railway employees.

Not only this, the board, which had earlier announced a bonus for 73 days and invited protest from employees, has now agreed to pay a bonus for 78 days for all the employees. Now every employee will be getting Rs 8,957 as bonus.

“The letter was sent on October 1 and now railway board has made these announcements,” said Prashar.

On Tuesday, the board also said that the demand for upgradation of staff members in various categories had been accepted and the file had been cleared by the Railways and sent to the Finance Ministry for implementation.

“Now every employee will have an upgradation in salary and grade pay. Approximately,Rs 1,000 will be increased in each one’s salary once finance department implements it,” added Prashar.

However, one important demand for recognising some private hospitals for treatment of employees as the railway hospital lacks all basic facilities is still pending.

“Ludhiana railway hospital is in pathetic condition and we have to bear the brunt many times. We will make sure that this demand is also accepted at the earliest,” said Prashar.
