The kitchen budget of the common man continues to be disturbed as after onions,tomatoes have become dearer. Prices of tomatoes in retail market on Wednesday touched Rs 100 a kg and vegetable vendors have indicated that the prices are expected to come down by next week.
Onion prices which had dropped to Rs 50 a kg have again soared to Rs 70-80 a kg in retail market.
Amarjeet Singh,president of wholesale fruits and vegetables association said,“Onions and tomatoes come from Nasik mandi at the moment and this mandi is closed for a week because of Diwali holidays. So in the absence of the stock,there is a shortage of the product in the domestic market,so prices are bound to increase.”
Local vegetables will start coming in the retail market from mid-november onwards. Vendors indicated that prices will come down once local vegetable floods the market.
Meanwhile,kitchen budget continues to be disturbed because vegetables cannot be cooked without using onions and tomatoes. Customers have no choice but to buy these items at a higher price.
