A convict who had been lodged in Faridkot jail escaped from police custody on Wednesday. Sarban Singh,facing charges of theft,loot and burglary was being brought to Jagraon court for a hearing when the incident occurred. As per police sources,Sarban was allegedly brought in a private vehicle instead of a police one. Police sources said the convict had convinced officials to take him to Jagraon court in a private car as he was not feeling too well. The police allegedly relented. On reaching the court,however,it has been learnt that police officials alighted the car and before Sarban could get off,his accomplice who was driving sped away.
Commenting on the incident,SSP Jagraon,A S Chahal said: We have lodged an FIR and have even identified the person who helped Sarban escape. This person also belongs to Sabuwana village in Ferozepur district. We are conducting raids and will nab the two soon. It is the Faridkot police,however,who need to look into the negligence committed by their men.
As per police records,Sarban robbed the house of a Sadiq based businessman in August 2010 and looted seven kgs of gold from the latters home . Goods worth Rs 17 crore were stolen in the theft.
