Eight tons of sandalwood was stolen by two brothers from a container which was going from New Delhi to Ludhiana. The sandalwood,costing more than Rs 2 crore,was hidden by the 60-year-old mother of the miscreants.
The police arrested the accused late on Friday and also recovered sandalwood from them. The accused hid the sandalwood in a vacant plot near their residence on Dhandhra road.
Those arrested have been identified as Sukhdeep Bagga,his brother Jagdeep Bagga and their mother Paramjit Kaur. Both the brothers are clearing agents at Dhandari dry port of Ludhiana.
The police are on the lookout for their accomplices Hanish Kumar alias Honey,Harvinder Singh and driver Raj Kumar.
A case was registered at Moti Nagar police station following the statement of Sanjiv Kumar of Vishvas Nagar of Delhi. He is a sandalwood dealer.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (city-4) Swapan Sharma said the accused cracked a deal with Sanjiv that they could help him in selling the wood in Ludhiana. On November 18,the accused loaded the wood in the container from the godown in Delhi for Ludhiana. The wood was stolen on the way and the complainant got an empty container.
The police formed a special investigation team (SIT) and initiated investigation. On Friday the police arrested the accused from Gill Canal Bridge following a tip-off, said the ADCP.
