Victims of 1984 riots protested outside Congress Bhawan near clock tower on Sunday. Protesters vandalised hoardings and banners outside the bhawan. Though party workers demanded police action against protesters, police did not register any case. SHO Surinder Mohan said, “We reached the spot when they were protesting. We have not received any formal complaint from the party as of now.”

The Danga Peerat Association (1984 riot victims) were protesting against Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s remark on riot victims.A member of the association A S Rajpal said, “We never wanted to join hands with other political parties so we protested separately.”

Boards with pictures of District Congress Committee President Pawan Dewan and Rural President Malkiat Singh Dakha were vandalised.  Ludhiana District Congress Committee condemned the protest and called it an act of  hooliganism.

In a joint statement issued here on Sunday Dewan, former minister Rakesh Pandey and local councillor Parminder Mehta criticised the indifferent attitude of the police when the association was protesting. They added, the incident has created a sense of fear among locals as was a residential area. They added, since it was a sunday, a major tragedy was averted as the miscreants could have lynched the people working there. However, police said that they have received no written complaint yet.
