On the last day of withdrawal of nomination papers,172 candidates took their papers back and now only 543 are left in the fray. Rebel candidates from several parties and independents have taken their papers back. This includes 11 of the 29 Congress rebel candidates.
The prominent ones include Congress rebels Asha Garg and K P Rana and their covering candidates. Pawan Puri,SAD rebel from ward 56 also took his papers back.
In the Ludhiana West constituency,no Congress rebels have taken their papers back. They have expressed anger towards MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu because allegations are being raised that he got tickets allotted in his constituency to his favourites.
Ashu, however, denied the charges and stated that 13 wards in his constituency will have interesting contests because many heavyweights are contesting against the Congress candidates. He,however, denied the effect of rebels in his ward on party candidates.
In the BJP,Bittu Bhatia from ward 18 has withdrawn his papers while Haswinder Dodhi from ward 22 is another rebel who took his papers back today. District BJP President Parveen Bansal said that a few more have also taken their papers back and the party is compiling the list.
However, the majority of the independents have taken their papers back. So the troubles of parties are not yet over.
The candidates are in full campaign mode, which includes nukkad meetings,door-to-door campaigning and even small public gatherings.
The candidates are more worried about the rebels than their rivals,as was seen in ward 56,where SAD rebel Harpreet Bedis wife Veera Bedi is contesting, and ward 40, where BJP rebel Jaswinder Singh Jassa is contesting.
The party candidates are telling the voters to vote only for them and not the others who have betrayed the party.
