Even 10 days after the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation elections were held, huge hoardings and billboards put up by candidates seeking votes continue to dot the city. Neither the civic body nor the candidates have bothered to remove them.

While officially,it is the duty of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation to remove illegal hoardings each week, the LMC did not do it either during or after the elections.

Residents are annoyed. “I hired a rickshaw-walla and paid him Rs 200 to remove all the posters the Congress and Akali leaders had put up on my boundary wall. Ethically,it should be the duty of the candidates to ensure that their posters are removed but no one bothers. They do not even ask us before pasting them on our walls,” said Amarbir Singh of Pakhowal Road.

During the polls,Deputy Commissioner Rahul Tewari had said that he would ask LMC Commissioner M S Jaggi to see that all the illegal hoardings put up for elections were removed. However, nothing of the sort happened.

The LMC Commissioner could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.

With the Election Commission keeping a watchful eye on the candidates in the fray in the Vidhan Sabha elections, this menace was completely absent. Even then candidates had put up huge hoardings, but after the EC cracked down, all these were removed. However, during the MC polls, since the EC was not too active, all kinds of poll violations happened.
