A DAY after the ruling Samajwadi Party-supported candidates won 60 out of the 74 zila panchayat chairpersons’ posts in the state, BSP chief Mayawati Friday said the indirect election became “a joke” and that the SP has patted its own back by misusing the government machinery.
In a statement, she said the district administration did not let the candidates supported by opposition parties file their nomination papers. Mayawati said those who have been elected as chairpersons will “either rebel against SP after the change of government in the state or removed by bringing a no-confidence motion as has often happened”.
She said her party had emerged with “first rank” in the direct elections for the post of zila panchayat members, and the SP had been discarded by the people. But the ruling party was not leaving any opportunity to claim small victory “through fraud” and “by misusing government machinery”, Mayawati said.
“It is unfortunate that the SP is claiming big success in district panchayat chairman polls when they had blatantly misused official machinery, hence making a mockery of the election process. The victory on the basis of massive irregularities is hollow,” Mayawati said in a party release here.
She said the people are unhappy with the SP government and the ruling party is fast loosing its public support.
“We now await the next assembly elections, which will be held under the direct supervision of the Election Commission and central forces will be deployed which will make the goonda and mafia elements ineffective,” she said.
