A 20-year-old man was killed when unidentified men hurled a crude bomb at him in Mutthiganj area of the city early Wednesday. The police suspect the victim may have known the assailants.
According to the police,at least three men reached the house of Ashish Gupta, son of Arvind Gupta,a resident of Babuganj Mandi in Mutthiganj area, around 2.30 am and asked him to come out.
The police said Ashish came out of the house as he apparently knew one of them.
All of them then sat near a bicycle shop some distance away when, following an argument between Ashish and the assailants, one of them hurled the bomb at him.
Gupta collapsed under the impact of the explosion and died on the spot.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Ashish, who used to assist his father in the family business, was in bad company.
He would reach home late and would often be found in the company of boys consuming alcohol. His mobile phone, which he used excessively to chat with his various girl friends, was recently confiscated by his parents, said a police officer.
He,however, said the family has not mentioned anybody as suspects so far.
We have constituted teams and will question the family members, said the officer, adding that differences between the assailants and the victim over some affair cannot be ruled out. A case of murder has been registered.
