Laying the foundation stone of a mini-sports complex that is being touted as the first-of-its-kind in eastern Uttar Pradesh and other projects worth Rs 72 crore, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday said that Gorakhpur is transforming fast after having got rid of its earlier image of being known for “gang war, dirt and mosquitoes”.

Promising the youth of the region that he would ensure that the best coaches are available in the sports complex, the CM said that he has given Rs 3 crore from his MLA fund for the construction of the structure which will be built on 2 acres of land at the cost of Rs 6 core.

The complex will comprise a shooting hall, a tennis court, a basket ball court, a playground and a multi-purpose hall.

Accompanied by Gorakhpur MP Ravi Kishan and other local leaders, Adityanath listed “changes” brought to Gorakhpur — from bringing AIIMS to a fertiliser factory and widening of roads. He appealed to the people of Gorakhpur to take a pledge to keep the city “swachh aur sundar” (clean and beautiful).

“Earlier, Gorakhpur was known for gang wars, loot by criminals and anarchy was at its peak. There was terror of mosquitoes and of diseases because of lack of hygiene. Till six years ago, hundreds of children used to die due to encephalitis because the governments at the time did not have the intent to implement programmes for making any improvement,” the CM said.

Listing the efforts of both the state and central governments for promotion of sports and sportspersons, Adityanath alleged that till nine years back, no one was eager to invest in sports even as sports open various avenues for the youth.

Besides development, Gorakhpur was witnessing increase in tourism activities as well, Adityanath claimed that a large number of films are being shot in Gorakhpur because of the changes that have happened in the city.

Citing an example of other cities, which are submerged in water due to heavy rains, Adityanath said, “A system is being developed for the drainage of waste water in the city. Since many cities across the country are affected due to global warming, Gorakhpur will have to be ready to tackle such a problem.”
