With regard to the development of the sewage system in six towns under the Yamuna Action Plan Phase II,a state-level committee gave the approval to the Detailed Project Reports (DPR) on Friday.
The towns include Ghaziabad,Saharanpur,Muzaffarnagar,Agra,Vrindavan and Etawah. The entire project will cost Rs 4,692 crore.
The Yamuna Action Plan Phase-II is a Central government project under which the sewerage system will be developed in cities along the Yamuna in the state.
The DPRs were approved in a meeting comprising officials from National River Conservation Directorate (NRCD),Ministry of Environment and Forests,UP Jal Nigam and Department of Urban Development. Alok Ranjan,Principal Secretary,Urban Development chaired the meeting.
The UP Jal Nigam had got these DPRs prepared by a consultant M/S DHV India Private Limited. Feasibility study reports and master plans of these cities for this project were approved by the state government in July,2008. The studies and preparation of reports were funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
“Now these reports will be forwarded to the National River Conservation Directorate,Ministry of Environment and Forests for necessary action like financing and implementation,” said AK Srivastava Managing Director of UP Jal Nigam.
As many as 17 new sewage treatment plants,33 new sewage pumping stations and 3,287 kms new sewer lines will be laid under the project. 449 slums with a population of 12.68 lakh will also be benefited. Around Rs 73 crore has been earmarked for the slum improvement work in these towns.
Srivastava said the state government and the Centre will fund the project and their sharing in expenditure will be finalised soon.
