Upset over an alleged rape attempt on her,a 30-year-old married woman committed suicide by setting herself on fire in Bilsanda area of Pilibhit district on Tuesday. The police, however, denied the allegation of a rape attempt and had yet to lodge an FIR until evening.

Pilibhit SP Amit Verma said that one Pramod Kumar, who was heavily drunk, had entered in an altercation with the woman at Harharpur village Monday night. He allegedly also molested the woman. The locals intervened and the man then left the place.

But Pramod went to the woman’s house in the morning and started abusing her. He also misbehaved with the woman. As he left, the woman went inside her room and set herself ablaze after dousing kerosene on her around 9 am,said the SP.

The woman, who suffered about 100 per cent burns, was rushed to the district hospital which referred her to Bareilly where she died during treatment. The accused is yet to be arrested,Verma said.

The victim’s husband and three brothers are employed in Delhi and the woman stayed alone in Pilibhit, the SP said.

Station Officer of Bilsanda K P Yadav denied molestation, and said that Pramod had misbehaved with the woman during an altercation following which she committed suicide.

The SO said that he has received a complaint from the victim’s sister-in-law Mithilesh Devi and he will be lodging an FIR under IPC section 306 (abetment of suicide) against Pramod.

However,Mithilesh Devi alleged that Pramod had been passing lewd remarks on her sister-in-law for the past few weeks.

On Monday night,a drunken Pramod stopped at their house, molested her sister-in-law and even made an attempt to rape her,Mithilesh alleged.

As the woman screamed for help, other women in the house rescued her. The neighbours too gathered there and sent Pramod to his house.

However,Pramod again came to their house in the morning and started abusing her sister-in-law for the allegations of molestation and rape attempt. He even made offensive remarks on her and issued threats before leaving the place.

Upset over the humiliation, her sister-in-law set herself afire,Mithilesh alleged.

The victim and the accused, both, belong to Dalit community.
