The police said Maya told them that she and her paramour Omkar Maurya, who is missing, had killed her husband Kashiram’s first wife Sonpati. She suspected that Kashiram was planning to start living with her,the police said.
On Sunday morning, the staff of Mahila Thana allegedly found Maya hanging from her sari. She was rushed to hospital where doctors declared her brought dead.
The police said Maya took the step because her parents and husband disowned her after her arrest. “A panel of doctors has been formed to conduct a postmortem. Instructions have also been issued to videograph the postmortem process,” said Faizabad SP RK Chaturvedi.

On July 10,the Faizabad police found Sonpati’s body at a field in Sukhipur. During investigation,it came to light that Maya was seen near the spot on the day of murder. The police questioned her and she allegedly confessed to the crime.
“She told us that on the day of the incident,Omkar went to Sonpati’s house and told her that Kashiram wanted to meet her outside the village. Sonpati went with Omkar outside the village where Maya was waiting. They attacked her and strangled her with a scarf. When Sonpati died, they threw the body in the bushes and escaped,” said Station Officer of Raunahi Raja Ram Singh Rana.
In the evening,Chaturvedi removed Station Officer of Mahila Thana,Poonam Awasthi, and suspended two women constables for negligence of duty.
