Kavita Karkare, wife of slain anti-terrorist squad (ATS) chief Hemant Karkare,on Sunday said giving religious or political overtones to her husband’s death would belittle his sacrifice. She also said the Centre was acting “too slow” in ensuring justice to victims of the 26/11 terror strikes and failed to punish its perpetrators.
“The government is acting too slow in ensuring punishment… It has been two years since the attack but the Centre could not trace its mastermind. Besides, the government has also not taken any encouraging steps that shows that it was really serious to ensure punishment to the culprits,” said Kavita.
She said it was irrelevant whether or not Hemant Karkare had called up Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh hours before he was killed by terrorists during the attack.
“To associate it with Hindu terrorism or any other theory is to belittle the supreme sacrifice made by brave personnel of the police and armed forces in defending the country against the attack on its security,” said Kavita.
Kavita, along with Vinita Kamte and Smita Salaskar — wives of slain Mumbai additional commissioner of police Ashok M Kamte and encounter specialist Vijay Sahadeo Salaskar — were honoured by the Sahara Group in Lucknow on the occasion of Martyrs’ Day on Sunday.
Vinita Kamte and Smita Salaskar also said justice was slow and that the true tribute to the martyrs would be to “expedite the process of investigation and bring to justice the masterminds of the attack living comfortably in Pakistan.”
“It is not palpable that something is being done to punish the terrorists and perpetrators of the attack… The Centre is moving slow to ensure punishment to the mastermind of 26/11 attack…and later other such incidents continue to happen,” Smita said.
Vinita said the Centre “should make strict law to check terrorism and fix a time-frame to complete inquiry in such cases.”
“The people should feel that there was rule of law in the country and if the government failed to provide justice to victims to Mumbai attack, the faith of people would shatter,” she added.
Families of the martyrs of the Kargil War and the Dantewada Naxal attack were also honoured.
